The other day while I was having my hair removed in an IPL session, a sudden thought came to me that it’s ridiculous what beauty standards are. I don’t know in which period of human evolvement did we start thinking that women having hair is “ugly” or “unclean”. Our caveman ancestors certainly didn’t have problems with their hair and they still managed to procreate and made us.
I believe that we were all subjected to the scrutiny of what beauty is at some point in our lives by our environment and we feel compelled to change something in ourselves in order to fit in. This is especially more so for women in my opinion. When the movement with a group of women showing their unshaven armpits came about, it received more negative reviews than positive, including judgements from women ourselves. But who are we to judge what one does or not with their armpit hair? It is ok to want to feel and look beautiful, to do things that make us feel good. It is also ok to prescribe to different notions of beauty but it is also important to know what our intentions are. Is it because I truly want it or because I think it’s what others will define me as beauty?
